VCOM to Accept Student Applications for Auburn Campus

May 6, 2014 – The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) received notification from its accrediting body that it was approved to establish a new branch campus in Auburn, Alabama. VCOM is fully accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), which is the only accrediting agency for pre-doctoral osteopathic medical education, and is recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE). VCOM now has the final accreditation approval by COCA to go forward with full licensure with the State of Alabama and to begin recruiting students.

“We are very pleased about the approval for the VCOM-Auburn campus,” said Dixie Tooke-Rawlins, D.O, VCOM’s Provost, Dean and Executive Vice President. “We will now be able to begin our hiring and recruitment plans to prepare for our opening in 2015, however, COCA will require one additional site visit in the spring of 2015 to assure the building and hiring plans are complete before we can officially enroll students. The vision for the Auburn and VCOM collaboration is to improve the health of Alabama’s citizens and the region, and to promote the advancement of biomedical research on the Auburn campus. Auburn University is committed to supporting VCOM students by providing a rich academic and co-curricular environment.

In 2012, VCOM, the Auburn Research and Technology Foundation, and Auburn University signed a collaboration agreement to work together to establish a third VCOM campus. VCOM currently has collaborative research programs with Auburn University and clinical programs for the current VCOM students training in hospitals within Alabama. “Auburn’s collaboration with VCOM will have a significant and positive impact on health sciences research on our campus. We are pleased to work with them to advance healthcare in Alabama and the Southeast,” said John Mason, Auburn University Vice President for Research & Economic Development.

“VCOM has realized what many of us have known for a long time – Auburn is a special place. We welcome VCOM to the Auburn community and I look forward to seeing the important research that will result through their partnership with Auburn University. Not only is VCOM-Auburn an incredible asset for Alabama’s medical community, its arrival in Auburn is a powerful economic catalyst with an investment exceeding $50 million over the next two years without costing
