VA reports spike in suicides among youngest vets

WASHINGTON (AP) — The
doctor who oversees suicide prevention efforts for the Department of
Veterans Affairs says the latest data shows an alarmingly sharp increase
in the suicide rate among the youngest male veterans.

The department says the suicide rate for male veterans between the ages of 18-29 increased nearly 44 percent from 2009 to 2011.

Dr. Jan Kemp says too many younger veterans getting care for physical wounds are not seeking treatment for mental health issues.
