Chapman calls resignation “in my best interest”

Alabama's Secretary of State is stepping down.

Beth chapman has been in office for years and still has 17 months left in her term.

“I've
been in office for 10 years now as secretary of state and started
looking at some opportunities in the private sector and certainly have
to make a decision that's in my best interest, the best interest of my
family, and, at this time, that's in our best interest.”

 “I
will be stepping down, and I will be leaving this office in great,
great hands, very competent staff of people. I've spoken with the
governor, he's been very supportive and, of course, will appoint my
replacement.”

Chapman says she will officially step down August first.
