Ex-Ala. police officer found guilty of arson

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — An
ex-Birmingham police officer has been found guilty in a series of
arsons at more than a dozen vacant buildings.

Curtis Thornton
appeared in court Thursday and a jury deliberated for just more than two
hours before delivering the verdict. His sentencing is scheduled for
July 25.

Thornton was charged with arson, attempted arson and
criminal mischief in 2012 blazes in Birmingham and Warrior, which is
just north of Birmingham.

A second Birmingham police officer,
36-year-old Jason Arnold, and 48-year-old Anthony Weaver are also
accused in the fires. Weaver's trial is scheduled to begin June 17 and
Arnold's has been set for Oct. 7
