5 vehicles set afire in Columbus historic district

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Columbus officials are investigating the burning of five vehicles in the city's historic district.

Historic
district resident Cathy Fussell said she was awakened by a loud
explosion about 3:20 a.m. Saturday. It was a tire exploding on her van,
which was burning from the rear. She said all five vehicles that were
set on fire were parked on the street, but vehicles parked in driveways
were skipped.

Columbus Fire Marshall Ricky Shores told the
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that the incident appears similar to fires that
occurred in 2006 and 2008.

Fussell said she did not have a
vehicle involved in those fires, and she knows of no neighborhood
controversy that could have prompted the fires.
