Producer on “Raising Adam Lanza”

(CNN)- A PBS documentary provides new details about Adam Lanza, the gunman in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. In “Raising Adam Lanza,” people close to the family talk about their impressions of Lanza.

The writer and producer told CNN what they were able to learn from the film.

“I
think the thing that we learned most about him is how strange a child
he was and how though he committed a truly monstrous act, there was
nothing monstrous about him growing up. He was, if anything, exactly the
opposite. He was very meek, fearful of the world, very easily spooked
by things that you and I would find completely unremarkable. And it
doesn't jive with somebody who then walks into an elementary school and
starts spraying gunfire all over the place. So something happened late
in his life that caused a drastic snap. And what that is, is the
question that's still unanswered.”

A source close to the investigation tells CNN Lanza was obsessed with other mass murders.

Police say Lanza took his own life in December after killing his mother and 26 people, including 20 children.

There is an $85-billion dollar deadline looming over Washington at this hour.

President
Obama is back at work after a golf vacation and working to avoid deep
cuts to military and discretionary spending – also known as
sequestration- that are due to take effect next month.

In this latest showdown over deficit reduction in Washington, neither side of the aisle is showing any sign of compromise.

Tory Dunnan has the latest.

LONGER AIRPORT LINES….

FEWER FIRST RESPONDERS….

REDUCED MILITARY READINESS.

THESE
ARE JUST SOME OF THE CONSEQUENCES PRESIDENT OBAMA WARNS WILL BECOME
REALITY IF FORCED SPENDING CUTS TAKE EFFECT ON MARCH FIRST.

These
cuts not smart, they are not fair, they will hurt our economy, they will
add hundreds of thousands of Americans to the unemployment roles.

TO
REPLACE THE CUTS, DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE PROPOSE A COMBINATION OF MORE
TAX REVENUE FROM TOP EARNERS, CUTTING AGRICULTURE SUBSIDIES AND
REDUCING DEFENSE SPENDING AFTER THE END OF COMBAT OPERATIONS IN AFGHANISTAN.

BUT HOUSE REPUBLICANS REFUSE TO SUPPORT ANY INCREASES IN TAX REVENUES.

HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER RELEASED A STATEMENT TUESDAY ARGUING THE PROBLEM IS GOVERNMENT SPENDING.

HIS COUNTERPARTS IN THE SENATE DON'T DENY THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE CUTS WILL BE DRAMATIC.

Republicans
deserve blame. I'll take some blame for it but the President of the
United States is supposed to lead. Why doesn't he call people over, and
we sit down and prevent the sequestration from happening?

THE PRESIDENT IS CALLING ON CONGRESS TO PASS A TEMPORARY RESPITE WHILE NEGOTIATIONS ON A LONG-TERM SOLUTION CONTINUE.

I'm willing to work with anybody to get this job done. None of us will get 100 percent of what we want.

THE SPENDING CUTS WERE MANDATED BY A 2011 AGREEMENT TO RAISE THE FEDERAL DEBT CEILING.

THE IDEA BEHIND THE CUTS WAS TO FORCE CONGRESS INTO COMING TOGETHER BEHIND A COMPREHENSIVE DEFICIT REDUCTION PLAN.

BUT SO FAR THAT PLAN HAS BACKFIRED.

IN WASHINGTON, I'M TORY DUNNAN REPORTING.

Without action, nearly $1-trillion in cuts are slated over the next 10-years.
