Lee County Sheriff: Deputy shoots suspect in front of 7 yr old in self defense

By: Sheriff Jay Jones

Smiths Station, AL-

A Lee County
Sheriff's Deputy on patrol in the Smiths Station area of southeast Lee County
attempted to stop a vehicle bearing a tag matching that of a vehicle reported
stolen to the Columbus, Georgia Police Department in November of 2012.

The
suspect vehicle turned into the driveway of a residence located in the 2700
block of Lee Road
243 and continued around to the back of the house. The sheriff's deputy
followed the suspect vehicle into the backyard, exited his patrol vehicle and
attempted to make contact with the driver.

The suspect vehicle then turned
toward the deputy and began to accelerate toward him.

The deputy then gave several
verbal commands to the driver of the suspect vehicle to stop. The suspect
vehicle continued to accelerate toward the deputy who then fired multiple
rounds from his sidearm at the driver side windshield of the suspect vehicle.

The suspect vehicle then came to a stop.

Other law enforcement officers arrived
and made contact with the adult male driver who had what appeared to be a
gunshot wound to the head.

A 7 year old male child who is not related to the
suspect was a passenger in the vehicle during the incident and was not injured.

The suspect was transported to the Medical
Center in Columbus, Georgia
and his condition was described as “critical”. As standard procedure the Lee
County Sheriff has requested the Alabama
Bureau of Investigation to initiate an investigation into the incident.
