Petition to label Westboro hate group Most Popular

(CNN)- More than 250,000 people want a Kansas based church, known for its
pickets at soldiers' funerals, to be labeled a “hate group”.

As of Wednesday night, 253,000 people have signed an online petition on the White House website. The thousands of signatures makes it the most supported single petition ever on the White House site.

The petition says the church has targeted homosexuals, the military and other religions. The petition was created December 14th, the day of the mass shooting that killed 20 young students and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Westboro had threatened to protest at the funeral of Sandy Hook Elementary School principal Dawn Hochsprung, but it was headed off by a counter-protest of motorcyclists.

The petition notes that Westboro Baptist is already recognized as a
hate group by organizations like The Southern Poverty Law Center.

The church is primarily made up of members of one family.

Separate petitions calling on the government to investigate or revoke
the group's tax-exempt status have also received well over the 25,000
signatures required to trigger an official response from the White
House.
