Phenix City fires Parks and Rec employees for improper use of equipment


Phenix City,  AL- Several Parks and Recreation employees have been fired, and another arrested, after an internal and criminal investigation revealed they were using city equipment for personal gain.

On November 26, 2012, the City Manager of Phenix City, Wallace Hunter, received complaints of City employees using city owned equipment on private property and on city time. The City Manager directed the Phenix City Police Department to investigate the complaints and the Police Department initiated an internal investigation on the same day. The initial internal investigation found evidence that the complaints were valid and the internal investigation quickly evolved into a criminal investigation.

Based on the internal and criminal investigation, it has been determined that several City of Phenix City employees with the Parks and Recreation Department had been using city owned equipment, materials and supplies for personal gain for some time. It was also determined that some of these employees had removed City of Phenix City owned equipment, materials and supplies from city property to be used on private jobs. As a result of this investigation, there have been terminations of four employees from the Parks and Recreation Department. The identity of the terminated employees will not be released, as this is a personnel matter that still requires due process.

The investigation has also resulted in one arrest for theft or property, 2nd degree. The individual arrested for theft is identified as Jimmy Jackson of Phenix City, AL.

The investigation is continuing and it is possible that there will be additional criminal and administrative charges made against current and former City of Phenix City employees.
