Scholar Athlete of the Week: Alexis Jones
By Chelsa Messinger
When it comes to softball, it's always a plus to have a player that can do it all: pitch, hit, slap, steal. And for Columbus High, that player is Alexis Jones.
She's a pitcher, third baseman, and hits leadoff for the Lady Blue Devils. Plus, she's good at all of it. Jones is committed to play softball at Georgia Tech next fall.
“She's my workhorse,” said Head Coach Chad Mathis.
“She has great velocity, and when she's on the mound, we feel better, because we know we're going to play good defense behind her. And when we hit, we come in and have an opportunity to play offense. She's the caliber player to get us started for us.”
Her versatility doesn't stop on the field. Although she keeps her ERA low, her GPA is through the roof. She has a weighted 4.47 GPA and hopes to go to law school one day.
“I think it's important to make good grades,” said Jones.
“I plan on playing at the next level, and in order to be successful in college you have to still be in college. You have to keep your grades up, and that's important for the rest of your life,” she said.
When she's on the mound, consistency is key.
“It's really important to me, to not walk people, and give people free bags, you want to pitch to contact a lot, and not go so much for strikeouts,” Jones said.
She's also consistent in the classroom.
“I've made all A's all four years,” said Jones.
“It's just, you have to consistently do your homework, consistently study. My dad, school was really important to him and he's a doctor, and he really succeeded in life, and that makes me want to do the same thing.”
All that hard work certainly looks to pay off. Not only in the near future (Columbus has advanced to the second round of the Region Playoffs) but also in the future. She hopes to one day contend for an ACC title as a part of the Georgia Tech softball team.
“They play good teams, and it's ACC, and I'm really excited about it,” said Jones
