Former AU Medical Clinic worker charged with theft of property turns herself in

Auburn, AL – A month long investigation has landed a former Auburn University Medical Clinic worker behind bars for embezzlement.            

The former worker, Karen Wingard is out of jail on bond after turning herself into Auburn Police on Sunday.

Auburn Police Chief Tommy Dawson says, “This past Sunday she turned herself into police here and was charged with theft of property.”

According to police reports, Wingard allegedly stole thousands of dollars from the medical clinic since 2009.

Chief Dawson explains, “Through their accounting firm, they became suspicious of some missing funds.It could be more than $100,000.”

The East Alabama Medical Center employs workers at Auburn's Medical Clinic. The hospital declined to comment on what position wingard held at the clinic.

“When you work at a place and you have access to it, we are still investigating to how this happened,” Chief Dawson says.

The East Alabama Medical Center has declined to comment because this case is still under investigation.

Auburn University also declined to comment on the case.
