Renoir found in flea market may be stolen
Washington, D.C. (WJLA) – The FBI is now investigating the Renoir painting that was bought at a flea market in 2010 for just seven bucks!
The Washington Post is reporting that it may have been stolen decades ago.
Here's where the mystery starts. Papers found by a Post reporter show that the collector who once owned the Renoir, loaned it to the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1937.
The museum originally said it had never entered its facility. But, according to the Post, an old loan registration document says someone stole the tiny landscape from the museum back in 1951, shortly after the donor died.
An insurance claim was paid out and the museum says it wants the Renoir back.
The current owner has agreed to hold off on selling it at auction until the FBI finishes its investigation.
